Mir: the Urdu legend

His original name was Mohammed Taqi. His takhallus or pen-name was Mir. Mir Taqi Mir, who is also spelled as Meer Taqi Meer, was the leading Urdu poet of the eighteenth century. He is one of the Urdu pioneers who gave shape to the Urdu language. He was one of the top poets of the Urdu ghazals and remains undoubtedly the foremost name in Urdu poetry. He is often remembered as Khuda-e-Sukhan which means God of poetry.

He was born at Agra in 1723. It was at that time called “Akbarabad”. After the death of his father, he left for Delhi at the age of 11. His philosophy of life which was based on emphasis on the importance of love and compassion reflects in his poetry also.

He finished his education in Delhi and worked as a courtier-poet. He lived much of his life in Delhi. Later he sifted to Lucknow. Distressed to witness the plundering of his beloved Delhi, he gave vent to his feelings through some of his shayari and ghazals. He remained in Lucknow for the remainder of his life.

Mir is highly reputed Urdu poet and his ghazals are its proof. In his time Urdu literature and poetry was at a shaping stage. Mir Taqi Mir’s instinctive artistic sense helped him strike a balance between the original expression and new enhancements coming in from Persian language and created simple, natural and elegant Urdu poetry.
