Final determination of Malignant Mesothelioma group stages
Once your mesothelioma doctor is able to determine the T, N and M stages of pleural Mesothelioma, he will club them together for stage grouping and assign your disease an overall stage for final determination of its affect on you. Like the T and N stages the final stages are also classified into four distinct categories. These are Stage I, II, III, and IV respectively.
Stage I mesothelioma is determined combining the stages T1, N0 and M0. The cancer is located on either side of pleura which is the lining of the chest. The spread is only to the outer lung with at the most a few insignificant spots.
The stage II mesothelioma that is a combination of T2, N0, and M0 means that either your right or your left pleura lining in the chest is affected and the infection has spread to the outer lining, diaphragm or into the lung itself. However, there is no distant spread.
Stage III of the disease is a combination of T1 or T2, N1 or N2 and M0. Another possible combination is T3, N0 or N1 or N2, and M0. It involves infection in either of the pleura and spreads to the lung, diaphragm, lung and lymph nodes but no other distant sites. In the second form it spreads to chest wall, mediastinum or a particular spot on the chest wall.
The Stage IV that is an advanced form of the mesothelioma cancer
indicates infections to one or both pleura lining and spread to different organs, both distant and near and across the pleura to either side of the chest even directly affecting your heart and lungs.
